The idyllic countryside of the North Lakes ... |

Bassenthwaite Lakeside looking towards Skiddaw and Dodd |
The farm enjoys a glorious position overlooking Aughertree Fell. This is fantastic walking and cycling country and there are places to visit too numerous to mention. |
Daleside is a working sheep farm, and also has some minature Shetland ponies, dogs, goats, and two cats! There are animal pictures on our 'photographs' page.

Back O'Skiddaw |
Daleside lies within the magnificent landscape known locally as Back O'Skiddaw.
|
Back O'Skiddaw is the wide expanse of fells immediately north of Skiddaw. The Uldale and Caldbeck fells (to give them their proper names), are the most northerly fells in the Lake District and as such are little known and seldom trod. They rarely feature in guide books. There is a strong appeal about them not found in the more popular areas of Lakeland - they are unspoilt, serene and restful, a perfect sanctuary for birds and animals and those visitors who prefer to be away from crowds. Back O'Skiddaw especially is another world, a place that hasn't changed. Aughertree Fell is part of Back O'Skiddaw and is considered to be the most northerly fell within the Lake District. On her northerly slopes lie ancient earthworks, providing visible evidence of people living there in the Bronze age, through the Roman period and Medieval times. Please remember to look at the Photographs page. |
Walking |
There are two way-marked walks on the farm. The first leads to Barren Fell bypassing a now disused Limestone Quarry and Kiln and assorted limestone features. Barren Fell has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. |
The second walk takes you down to Johnny Beck, passing limestone crags and small springs. Down at the bottom of the valley, the beck widens into a stream. The walk takes you down to a hidden waterfall and a quiet wooded area. Remember to keep a sharp eye out for a glimpse of deer or red squirrel. |
On the farm there are areas of 'Managed Grassland' and 'Managed Upland Moorland' as designated by the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). A DEFRA leaflet describing 'conservation walks' is available - describing an attractive walk through a secluded limestone valley with banks rich in wild flowers, fenced from livestock to allow the flowers to flourish. |

There is a leaflet describing walks around Daleside and also those within a short drive.
